TRACK OF THE DAY
Floating Points - Wires [2013; Eglo Records]
This may actually be a re-post, but nevertheless, it is worth being the track of the day everyday.
Flowing instrumentalism from a burgeoning young producer in London, Wires is an amalgamation of contemporary jazz and electronic stewardship. Warm and inspiring, this is how music should be written in 2013.
Available to purchase through Eglo Records

Compilation of the Month - JUNE 2013
California Funk: Rare Funk 45s From the Golden State
[Now-Again Records; 2010]
Back in 2004, I picked up one of the best compilation CD albums I will ever own or will have the privilege to have listened to at the now shuttered Relative Theory Records of Norfolk, VA. It went by the name of Midwest Funk - Funk 45s from Tornado Alley. I remember digging into that CD on countless occasions throughout college and to this day. Nothing sounds quite like my go-to jam for a quick pick-me-up - Soul and Sunshine.
Fast-forward to browsing in Bleecker Bob’s in Greenwich Village NYC a few years later and I spotted a Carolina Funk CD with similar typefont and album art. It turns out that the label putting these out, Now-Again Records (owned by the distinguished Stones Throw Records), has a few of these in their arsenal and thrives on digging up these old 45s and reissuing them for a world who may have never had the chance to hear these once small town bands across America, performing some truly powerful music.
California Funk, my choice for compilation of June, is nothing short of genuinely excellent music. Tracks like “Talking About My Baby” by John Heartsman & Circles will have your head spinning and your soul yearning for more. My favorite experience with this record was a recent run I had around my neighborhood with this blasting in my ears - I really just let the music take me away and I lost track of all time.
Check out “Cold Heat” courtesy of Now-Again Records below and dig into this album and the aforementioned collections of lesser known funk and soul. Don’t miss the album closer, a rendition of the Marvin Gaye classic “What’s Goin On” by Mr. Clean & the Soul Inc.
Great name, great compilation!
Starting today, I’m revamping this Tumblr and will attempt to make it more of a music blog.
I figured I needed some sort of structure to it and I’ve brainstormed a few ideas over the past few weeks to make sure I can share meaningful posts without losing interest by posting too much or too little, something that has plagued my attempts at a music blog over the years.
The 1st of every month I will share Compilation of the Month reaching back to any year and showcasing a strong selection of various artists, styles, and labels.
Around mid-month, I will post a 2013 Album of the Month and an Album of the Month. The former will put the spotlight on a significant record of the new year and the latter will reach back to any year and shine light on a randomly selected incredible album. As I move forward, I will start to target which dates I want to do this each month, so it might be kind of rocky at first.
Each week, I will post a Track of the Week on or around Thursdays. Hopefully, this will get extended to sporadic daily tracks, but I figured I’d start small and go from there.
I’m working up the courage to also showcase Label of the Month to be posted each second week, so look out for that. There are just too many growing, defunct, well-established and outright incredible independent labels out there organizing the massive amount of talent on this planet and I want to be able to share these collectives.
As we move forward, I’m sure I will find all other sorts of things to share and learn how to make this Tumblr look better too. I’ve seen some great ones over the years and plenty of cluttered ones, so I’ll strive to make mine simple and tasteful. Drop me a line at jbhayesvt@gmail.com for any comments, suggestions, or inquiries.
For now, let’s get the Vital Quandary off to a fresh start!
